Decision Makers: Devonport City Council

We are calling on the school board and community to stop the planned removal of the landmark pohutukawa tree standing outside the Takapuna Grammar School library.

This iconic native tree is an essential part of our school environment for several key reasons:

  • Essential Sun Safety: During the hot summer months, the tree’s wide canopy provides vital shade where students can eat lunch and study outdoors without being exposed to New Zealand’s harsh UV rays.
  • Scarce Outdoor Shade: Safe, shaded spaces across the school grounds are already limited. Removing this mature tree significantly reduces comfortable outdoor areas for students.
  • Native Heritage: The pohutukawa is a native treasure that contributes to local biodiversity and deserves to be protected, not destroyed.
  • A Welcoming Campus: The tree enhances the atmosphere outside the library, creating an inviting, green, and vibrant space that boosts student well-being.

Sign this petition today to protect our native canopy, preserve student health, and keep our school grounds green!
