We call on the Government of Assam and the Government of India to retain strong ecological protection around Kaziranga and not weaken its present 10-km default Eco-Sensitive Zone to just 1 km without overwhelming scientific justification.
Kaziranga is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world’s most important habitats for the one-horned rhinoceros, elephants, tigers, and countless other species. It is also part of a living landscape that depends on wetlands, wildlife corridors, and flood-refuge areas to stay healthy. In Assam, where annual floods are a harsh reality, that natural protection matters even more.
We understand the pressure to promote development around Kaziranga. But development must never come at the cost of the very habitat that makes Kaziranga irreplaceable. Luxury tourism and commercial projects may bring short-term profit, but once wildlife space is lost, it cannot simply be rebuilt later. A five-star hotel can be built elsewhere. A damaged ecosystem cannot be replaced.
We therefore demand that all ESZ decisions be science-based, transparent, and publicly accountable. We ask that wildlife corridors and flood-refuge areas be protected, and that any development which compromises Kaziranga’s ecological integrity be rejected. Conservation must come before luxury and commercial interests.
The 10-km protection remains in force while the proposed site-specific ESZ awaits notification, and that protection should not be diluted now. Kaziranga has already endured floods, poaching, and decades of pressure. It should not be pushed into a future shaped by luxury development.
We stand together to defend Kaziranga’s wildlife legacy for the generations who will inherit it.
Kaziranga’s wildlife should never have to pay the price for human greed. Profit, construction, and so-called development cannot justify destroying forests and threatening the very habitat that countless animals depend on. We have already taken enough from nature. It is time to protect what remains not exploit it until there is nothing left. I’m signing this petition because Kaziranga must be protected, not sacrificed. 🦏🌿
