The current coach of the Staunton High School varsity team has fallen short in the current and past season. His methods have been tremendously disappointing and called into question by many players and parents. It is crucial for our student-athletes to have a supportive and effective coach who can guide them not just in sports but also in building confidence, character, and teamwork skills. Unfortunately, his approach severely negatively impacted the team’s performance and the morale of its members.
Under Coach Lohr's leadership, the team’s record declined sharply across his two-season tenure, with more losses than ever before and a noticeable drop in team spirit. The lack of proper training techniques as well as poor and convoluted game strategies led to this decline. Furthermore, there have been numerous reports of his disinterest during practices, tardiness, inadequate feedback to players, and a complete lack of substantive teaching and encouragement for team members during games and practices. These behaviors not only affect the team's ability to win games but also harm the players' experiences and their development in the sport.
Moreover, several parents have expressed concern over this coach's habit of avoidance of effective communication with players, which was not corrected properly despite complaints. His defensiveness when approached, lack of accountability, and failure to create a positive, inclusive, and supportive environment for all players must be corrected. He failed spectacularly across two seasons to establish a positive rapport with any of the players or families who support them.
The Staunton varsity volleyball players and families deserve a coach who values excellence, fairness, connection, and the emotional well-being of our student-athletes. We urge the school administration to take immediate action in removing Coach Lohr from his position and to appoint a coach who is qualified and committed to fostering a positive and productive environment for the team.

A coach is supposed to be a mentor who fosters both athletic growth and personal development. Unfortunately, this program is currently being led by someone who has shown that it is not a priority to elevate our athletes, and more importantly, fails to support their mental well-being. Our daughters deserve a qualified leader who builds their confidence, communicates effectively and values their growth on and off the court. Change is desperately needed.
