We urge Redland City Council to reject the proposed change in its Animal Management Law Review 2026 that would allow dogs to be walked on-leash in some foreshore and seashore areas on Coochiemudlo Island.
Coochiemudlo Island’s natural environment is highly valued by residents and visitors alike. The island's peaceful beaches are one of the main reasons people live here and visit here. Shorebirds frequent our beaches and are sensitive to human activities, let alone dogs. The proposal on page 6 of the Review, shown with the red line on the aerial photo in the banner image, covers a huge stretch of our accessible shoreline. That would change the character of the beaches that residents and visitors value as calm, peaceful, pristine.
There are already strong reasons to say no to the proposal. We already have a stretch of beach where dogs are allowed on leash during the year, and seasonally off leash. Some dog owners are happy with that. Others have kept pushing for more. Turning another part of the shoreline into a dog area will not settle the issue. It is likely to encourage people to ignore the leash rules, just as already happens on the designated dog beach.
This proposal would not fully satisfy those who want an off-leash park, but it would place more pressure on the beaches most people want to enjoy in peace. It could also increase dog-owner visitor numbers, including people who may not respect on-leash requirements. Just as importantly, it would put more strain on the island’s environment and wildlife, which Redland City Council already recognises as a consideration in its Review.
Please say no to RCC’s proposal. Petition closes 20 November.
