As Ashlyns School parents, we ask that the school would consider both an immediate adjustment to the current uniform expectations during the hot weather and, more importantly, a longer-term change to include tailored shorts as part of the school uniform policy.

With the high temperatures we are currently experiencing, many schools are already taking practical steps to support pupils. For example, Chesham Grammar School has informed parents that all students may wear PE kit next week due to the heat. Government guidance also makes clear that schools can relax uniform rules during hot weather to help keep children comfortable and safe. A similar temporary approach here could provide a simple and effective short-term solution for Ashlyns School students.

Looking more broadly, heatwaves are becoming more frequent, and many pupils are finding traditional uniform options—particularly trousers and skirts—uncomfortable and impractical in warmer conditions. While skirts are an alternative for girls, they are not always suitable for all girls, particularly in terms of comfort, modesty, and active play, and there are currently no equivalent options for boys, which creates inequality.

Introducing tailored shorts as a permanent uniform option could offer several clear benefits:
• Improved comfort in hot weather, supporting pupils’ concentration and wellbeing
• Greater practicality for active children, especially during break times and outdoor activities
• A more inclusive, gender-neutral option, allowing all pupils to choose what works best for them
Importantly, this approach is already being adopted by a number of UK secondary schools. For example:
• Sir John Leman High School allows plain, tailored shorts as part of its main uniform policy
• Sandy Secondary School includes shorts alongside trousers and skirts as standard options
• Westhoughton High School has introduced shorts for all pupils as part of a gender‑neutral uniform update
• Other schools such as Farlingaye High School and Chapel‑en‑le‑Frith High School have also recently introduced tailored shorts in response to heat and pupil feedback
These examples show that allowing smart, tailored shorts can be implemented in a way that maintains high uniform standards while improving comfort, inclusivity, and practicality.
We fully appreciate that uniform policies require careful thought and consultation, but would be very grateful if the school could consider:
• An immediate, temporary relaxation (such as allowing PE kit during periods of extreme heat), and
• A longer-term update to the uniform policy to include tailored shorts as a standard option.
