Background
The Legal Practice Council (LPC) is responsible for regulating the legal profession and protecting the public interest. It is expected to uphold the highest standards of fairness, transparency, competence and accountability.
However, many candidates, legal practitioners and members of the public have expressed concerns regarding the LPC's administration. These concerns include allegations of maladministration, administrative incompetence, inconsistent decision-making, lack of transparency in examination processes, prolonged delays, questionable disciplinary procedures, abuse of regulatory powers and inadequate accountability for officials.
There are also concerns that individuals who raise complaints or make protected disclosures may not always receive fair treatment. Whether these concerns are ultimately substantiated or not, they warrant independent examination because they affect confidence in the institution responsible for regulating South Africa's legal profession.
Recent public scrutiny of governance within justice-sector institutions has reinforced the importance of independent oversight where serious concerns arise. The legal profession should be held to the same standards of transparency and accountability that it expects from others.

We Call On Government To
Establish an independent Commission of Inquiry or parliamentary inquiry into the Legal Practice Council.
