A Statement of Support from the People of Lewis County
We, the undersigned residents, landowners, business owners, workers, and public servants of Lewis County, Kentucky, support the development of a advanced nuclear power plant at Carrs.
We sign as neighbors, not as a faction. Some of us hold office and most of us do not. We are farmers, teachers, retirees, parents, tradesmen, church members, and young people who would like to build a life here. We sign because we love this county and want it to have a future.
Why we support it
- Jobs that let our children stay home. For too long, Lewis County's young people have had to leave to find good work. A project of this size means years of construction jobs and then hundreds of lasting, well-paid careers in operations, maintenance, security, and engineering.
- A tax base for our schools, roads, and services. A power plant would pay taxes for generations. That money can strengthen our schools, our emergency services, our roads, and our libraries without raising the burden on the families already here.
- A boost for local business and agriculture. Workers buy groceries, fuel, meals, and homes. Local contractors, suppliers, and small businesses grow with them. Many of our farm families depend on off-farm income, and better jobs close to home help keep family farms in the family.
- Clean, reliable power for Kentucky. Nuclear energy runs day and night in every season and produces no carbon emissions. Kentucky has always powered this nation. This is how we keep doing it.
- A site made for it. Carrs already has a major rail line, a state highway, and high-voltage transmission close at hand. Few places in Kentucky are as well suited.
- A proven safety record. American nuclear plants are among the most closely regulated and safely run industrial facilities in the world, overseen by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
What we ask in return
Our support is given in good faith, and we ask the same in return:
- That safety, the Ohio River, and our land and water come first, at every stage.
- That Lewis Countians and Kentucky workers be hired and trained first, wherever possible.
- That the community be kept informed and given a real voice through public meetings as the project moves forward.
- That the project leaves Lewis County stronger than it found it.
Our pledge
We welcome this opportunity. We ask our state and federal leaders, our regulators, and the companies involved to know that Lewis County is ready, willing, and open for this project at Carrs. By signing below, we add our names to that support. Our county needs to be heard and be recognized as "OPEN FOR BUSINESS".
