Some members of our community are facing circumstances that are putting their health
and lives at serious risk. For individuals with chronic illnesses, ongoing treatments, disabilities, or urgent medical needs, losing health insurance is not simply a financial hardship, it can mean being unable to receive the medical care they desperately need.
This situation has created an extremely serious and urgent humanitarian concern within our community. Many affected individuals and families depend on Medicaid as their only source of health insurance and access to essential medical care. Without coverage, they are facing tremendous difficulty obtaining medications, attending medical appointments, receiving ongoing treatment, and managing serious and sometimes life threatening medical conditions.
Our community is deeply concerned that, if this situation is not addressed promptly, preventable medical complications and potentially loss of life may occur because individuals cannot afford the treatment and healthcare services they require.
We, the Colorado Afghan American Association, submit this petition on behalf of Afghan
American community members in Colorado who have recently lost or are at risk of losing their Medicaid health coverage.
We respectfully urge the appropriate authorities to:
1. Immediately review the Medicaid terminations affecting Afghan American
community members in Colorado.
2. Ensure that individuals who remain legally eligible for Medicaid are not improperly
denied or terminated from coverage.
3. Provide clear information and accessible assistance to affected individuals regarding
their Medicaid status, renewal requirements, appeals, and available alternatives.
4. Consider temporary protections or emergency assistance for individuals facing
serious or life-threatening medical conditions while their eligibility or other
circumstances are being reviewed.
5. Ensure that language barriers do not prevent Afghan community members from
understanding their rights, completing required paperwork, or accessing healthcare.
6. Work directly with community organizations, including the Colorado Afghan
American Association, to help identify affected individuals and connect them with
appropriate resources.
Cutting Medicaid to the refugees whom they rescued by our government means disloyalty and betrayal.
