Our 7th and 8th grade students deserve the opportunity to play football at their own level.
Currently, 8th graders who want to play school football may be required to compete on high-school JV teams alongside older and more physically developed athletes. This can be intimidating and may discourage students from participating.
Middle-school football would give our younger athletes an opportunity to develop their skills, build confidence, learn teamwork and prepare for the high-school program in a more age-appropriate environment.
This is not a new or unrealistic idea. North Carolina already allows middle-school football, and several NC school systems—including Lincoln, Cabarrus, Rockingham, Johnston, Harnett, Orange and Pender counties—provide football opportunities for 7th and 8th graders.
We are asking Avery County Schools to bring back a dedicated middle-school football program so our students have the opportunity to play, grow and represent their schools before moving on to high-school football.
Please support bringing middle-school football back to Avery County.
Give our kids a place to play. Give them a chance to grow. Give them a middle-school team to call their own.
Team sports are essential for our kids’ physical and personal growth. As rec leagues end, families face a gap in options to keep non-elite athletes active. Requiring middle schoolers to compete at the high school varsity level creates an unsafe, all-or-nothing system. It stunts player development, limits playing time, and causes kids to give up on sports. Restoring a dedicated middle school football program protects player safety and keeps our youth active, engaged, and supported
