Rowan County NC is the only county in the area that does not offer girls' volleyball in middle school. For this reason our high schools are at a major disadvantage because all the teams they play have had at least two years prior to high school to develop basic volleyball skills and are already working on advanced skills while our high school girls are just starting out. We are not giving our girls the opportunity to succeed in the sport to their fullest potential and in turn they could be missing out on athletic scholarships which would assist them with going on to college.
The current momentum confirms that the district administration can no longer ignore the disparity between local programs and our neighbors. I have requested a formal meeting with the school board chair to present these findings and discuss the necessary budget adjustments for a pilot program.

Volleyball has grown tremendously over the past few years with opportunities at the Junior Olympic level and college. To prepare girls interested in playing at the high school and college level they need to start in the middle schools and even the elementary schools. This sport is popular and provides girls with an alternative outet and opportunities to play in college when started early to create a solid foundation. Rock on!

I think we'd all agree that middle school can be a challenging environment for our girls to navigate. Student athletics builds self-esteem, confidence and helps to create a healthy mind and body. Any opportunity to foster healthy development should be made available to our kids. Volleyball is growing in popularity and competitiveness, without an early start in the sport our girls will be at a disadvantage when competing at the high school level against more experienced players. Fortunately we have a club team that helps fill the void left by the absence of a structured middle school program. Nonetheless, it doesn't make up for the school based program that should be available.

Popular, growing sport. Would be beneficial and offer another option for girls. Have it in the spring.

What else is the gym being used for in the fall? Lets have these ladies exposed to a wonderful sport and great teaching opportunity.

My daughter (7th grader at Erwin) plays for a private club. She would love the opportunity to play at Erwin. This would put our girls on an even playing field when the get to high school.
