Beckton Muslim Centre - We need answers & accountability
BIA – Request for Transparency, Clarification and Community Engagement
We, local residents of Beckton and supporters of the BIA, are asking the BIA's leadership for greater transparency, clarification and community engagement regarding the management and redevelopment of the Beckton Muslim Centre.
Members of the community have raised questions and concerns about the progress and cost of the redevelopment, financial governance, decision-making processes, compliance with the BIA's constitution, and communication between the leadership and the wider community.
We recognise that concerns or questions raised by members of the community do not, by themselves, establish that any individual has acted improperly. The purpose of this petition is not to make findings of wrongdoing or to prejudge any person. Rather, we are asking the BIA's leadership to address the issues openly, provide relevant information where appropriate, and allow the community to understand the facts.
We have sought to communicate with the BIA's office bearers and Executive Committee. Some members of the community feel that the responses received to date have not adequately addressed the questions being raised. We therefore believe that an open meeting, together with appropriate supporting information, would help resolve uncertainty and rebuild confidence.
In particular, we respectfully request clarification on the following matters:
1. Financial transparency: A clear account of significant donations and funds received for or on behalf of the BIA, including how such funds have been recorded, safeguarded and used. Questions have been raised within the community concerning a reported sum of approximately £20,000. We ask the BIA to clarify the circumstances and provide appropriate records so that the position can be understood accurately.
2. Governance and the constitution: Clarification regarding any proposals or decisions concerning the appointment, suspension or removal of Executive Committee members, together with confirmation of the relevant constitutional provisions and procedures followed.
3. Redevelopment: An update on the redevelopment of the Beckton Muslim Centre, including the reasons for delays, expenditure to date, anticipated total costs, funding arrangements and the expected timetable for completion.
4. Community engagement: Clarification regarding meetings or discussions involving Executive Committee members and local young people, following concerns expressed by some community members about their purpose and effect. We encourage constructive engagement that promotes unity and avoids unnecessary division.
5. Access to information: Regular and accessible updates about significant decisions affecting the BIA, including appropriate financial and governance information, subject to any legitimate confidentiality or legal requirements.
These are matters on which we believe greater openness would benefit everyone. We are not asking members of the public to assume that allegations or concerns are true. We are asking for the relevant information so that questions can be answered fairly and on the basis of evidence.
The BIA is an important community institution. We want it to be managed in accordance with its governing documents, with appropriate financial oversight and with open and respectful communication between its leadership and the community it serves.
We therefore ask the Executive Committee to hold an open community meeting at which these matters can be addressed, relevant information can be presented where appropriate, and community members can ask reasonable questions.
We encourage local residents and supporters of the BIA who support this request for greater transparency and constructive dialogue to sign this new petition.
Our objective is not conflict or personal criticism. It is to obtain clear information, encourage good governance and help maintain confidence in an institution that matters to the whole community.

After over two decades of working to establish a masjid, it is deeply concerning that such questions are being raised at its infancy. Clear processes, regulations, and transparent financial management should be basic standards. The community entrusted the executive committee with its donations, and it is their responsibility to provide the necessary information. It is truly a shame that these questions have had to be raised in the first place. It is genuinely disappointing!

When it collection money for many people for the house of Allah, every one who contributed, needs to know where his or contribution use. Hence transparency and accountability is in high priority for all of us. Consequences of misuse: Misusing funds for corruption, oppression, or forbidden acts brings severe punishment in the afterlife.
