The recent tragedy at Satya Niketan has Highlighted an Urgent Concern: Student Safety and the Lack of Affordable, Secure Accommodation around South Campus.
Through this petition, we, the students of Motilal Nehru College and the wider South Campus community, demand action on two critical issues:
1. Affordable & Accessible College Hostels 🏠
South Campus colleges and the University of Delhi should work together to provide safe, affordable and accessible hostel accommodation for students. Students should not be forced to depend on expensive private PGs simply because affordable college accommodation is limited.
2. Safety Audits & Regulation of Student PGs 🚨
Every PG and private accommodation housing students in and around South Campus should undergo a comprehensive safety inspection. This should include structural safety, fire safety, emergency exits, evacuation arrangements, electrical safety and other applicable safety standards. PGs that fail to meet the required standards should be identified and appropriate action should be taken.
We urge Motilal Nehru College, all South Campus colleges, the University of Delhi and the concerned authorities to come together and establish a long-term system that ensures students have access to both safe accommodation and affordable hostels.
This is not about politics or elections. It is about the basic right of every student to live safely while pursuing their education.
Our Demands:
🏠 Affordable college/University hostels for students
🔍 Safety inspection of every student PG in and around South Campus
🚨 Strict enforcement of applicable fire, structural and safety standards
📋 Regular re-inspection and certification of student accommodations
🤝 Coordination between colleges, University authorities, police and relevant civic authorities
🛡️ A safer and more affordable accommodation system for students
No student should have to choose between affordability and safety.

I live in one of the hostels there though that is one of the reason but I think a lot of students come here just because they want to build a life yet what they get is someone's shit attitude, unreasonable pricing, bad food and now poor quality of building, therefore I think the government and the university itself need to be proactive and to make sure that the students are safe and have a future to look forward to.

I also live in pg which 8500 for a month with twin sharing in small room
Pg are very expensive. Food quality is very bad .
I'm a part of the victims
How many more innocent lives must be lost before authorities take building safety seriously? People trusted that this place was safe, and now families are left grieving. This is not just a tragedy — it is a failure of responsibility and accountability. Those responsible must be identified and punished, and strict action must be taken so that no more lives are sacrificed because of negligence. We demand justice, accountability, and safe living conditions for everyone.

As a PG student I have experienced unfair prices, pathetic food quality and other similar problems and sincerely wish such tragedies, that occurred due to negligence by the owners cease to occur.
