Every December, millions of people around the world sit down to listen to the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. It is a cornerstone of British identity and the absolute heart of the festive season.
While many associate the service with Cambridge, this beautiful tradition actually began on Christmas Eve in 1880 at Truro Cathedral, Cornwall, devised by Bishop Edward White Benson.
In December 2030, this global tradition will mark its 150th anniversary.
I am Xanthe, a 14-year-old who writes at Xanthe’s Stamp Magazine, and I am launching this petition to ask Royal Mail to issue a dedicated set of Special Stamps in 2030 to celebrate this massive 150-year milestone of British choral music, art, and history.
Why this matters:
Global Tradition: From its humble Cornish roots, the service has become one of Britain's greatest cultural exports, broadcast globally since 1928.
Significant Historic Milestone: A 150th anniversary is a rare and perfect opportunity for a commemorative stamp set.
Keeping the Hobby Alive: By backing this campaign, you are also showing that the next generation of collectors cares deeply about preserving our shared heritage.
Because Royal Mail plans its Special Stamp calendar years in advance, we need to act now. We are already gathering support from church leaders, musicians, and cultural organisations. Now, we need your voice.
Please sign and share this petition to tell Royal Mail’s Stamp Advisory Committee that the world wants to see the 150th Anniversary of Carols and Lessons immortalised on our mail in 2030!
