We, the undersigned, request that the Open University require all software needed by students for study and/or assessment purposes to execute on all major desktop operating systems (i.e. at least recent versions of Windows, Mac OS/X and Linux) unless it can be shown that no suitable cross-platform application of that type exists. We further request that the Open University accept any documents conforming to OSI document format standards (e.g. ODF) from students, in addition to any other formats that the university sees fit to accept (e.g. Adobe PDF, MS Word .doc or MS OpenXML).

Updates

January 10, 2007

I have been spent all morning digging through the technical requirements for some of the new modules and it is honestly wild how many proprietary hurdles are still being thrown at students who just want to use a machine of their choice. It feels like such an unnecessary gatekeeper for learning and the messages I am getting from people feeling forced into buying hardware they do not want to use are exactly why I started this whole thing in the first place.

I honestly never thought this would gain this much steam but it just hit a serious turning point that feels like the start of something big. It is wild to see so many people dealing with these exact same software headaches and honestly it makes me feel like we might actually have a shot at getting someone to listen for once.

SO TRUE. Stop making us buy expensive software licenses just to access basic course materials.

Being forced to use proprietary formats is a nightmare when im trying to get work done. Open standards are the way to go.

Finally. Its ridiculous that I have to keep a windows partition just for one legacy app that barely works anyway. Linux should be completely supported

Its 2018 not 1995. Get with the times.
