Though a lot of us researchers here at the IOE use Mendeley and Zotero to perform our work, these two popular citation management tools are not installed on the IOE computers making it difficult for us to come into the Institute and truly work. Because of the lack of these tools on the IOE computers, many of us have resorted to working from home, or, having to carry around our laptops to and from the Institute. As PhD students, having to bring in our laptops each time to work has prompted us to start this petition. Not only can they be heavy and uncomfortable to carry, but also we store a lot of valuable data on our hard drives which we run the risk of losing every time our laptops leave our homes. Sure we use clouds to back up, but sometimes the really big files can take several hours (even days) to go up on the cloud; these uploads actually being interrupted and prolonged as our laptops travel to and fro in non-wifi areas. Also, the wifi connection available for our mobile devices (laptops included) at the IOE is not always as spot on as one would like, making it even more frustrating to work from our laptops at the Institute. In short, it would be great to simply come into "work", log into an IOE computer, sign into our respective bibliographic tools, and carry on the work we've left off on. We are petitioning for Mendeley and Zotero as they are the most widely-used, and free-of-cost tools for researchers here at IOE.
