Final supporters
The intent of this petition is to provide all eligible students in West Virginia, including private and home schooled students, the option to participate in public school sports and activities, particularly those governed by the West Virginia Secondary Schools Athletic Commission (WVSSAC).
At least 30 other states currently have laws in place providing opportunities for similar student participation. It is most commonly referred to as the “Tim Tebow” bill, named for University of Florida Heisman Trophy winner and former homeschool student Tim Tebow. This bill does not require public schools to give homeschooled or private schooled students a spot on the team, but gives them a chance to try out. The students would be required to meet academic standards, not otherwise have the sport opportunity through their educational tract and play for the school in which they are zoned.
Potential Student Benefits:
- Eligibility for over 21, 000 students in West Virginia to participate in WVSSAC activities
- Provide private and home schooled students an opportunity to participate in organized sports and band
- Potentially improve competitiveness of existing sports programs
- Allows flexibility in schooling options
- Eliminates discrimination in the allocation of our state tax education dollars
- Will provide student opportunity to physical and mental challenges, learning experiences, and development
With nearly 20% of West Virginia students being labeled as obese and ranking below the national average in education these additional opportunities could improve both these statistics.
West Virginia is a very rural state and opportunities for children to participate in sports and band may be limited or non-existent in their community.

I see the numbers creeping up and it makes me think about all those kids sitting at home who just want a fair shot at the team. If everyone reading this right now could just send the link to a handful of people in their contacts we would hit that thousand mark before I even have time to finish my coffee.

I was just looking at the count and we are almost at one hundred signatures which is honestly kind of wild because this started as just a thought in my head. If you could just send the link to someone else who might care about these sports rules it would help us hit that milestone before the day is out and honestly I think we could really use that momentum when we talk to the officials later.

As a libertarian, I believe that the freedom of choice for whats best for a parent's child is extremely important. Sports should still be available to students who decide to either attend a private school or get homeschooled.
Ladies and Gentlemen, this isn't rocket science. If you take the politics out of this decision and apply a little common sense, the decision is easy. We pay just as much property tax as those that go to public school, why are we not allowed to use the athletic programs? Long overdue.
I have two homeschooled teens who had to play basketball for private school teams and an upcoming middle schooler who will be searching for a team next year. They would be an asset to our local school team and they deserve to play in a bigger arena.
Its really important to get kids involved--the fact that we are not allowing children to play sports in high school is barbaric to me as it not only promotes child health and fitness, but it creates friendships and teaches kids very important llife lessions.
I would love to see this bill passed! My son, who has since graduated, loved playing football, but due to situations we decided to homeschool during his 9th grade year. It would've been nice to have seen him continued to play and not be stopped because of the academic route we chose.
Good luck, Hope you Remember Presidential candidate Joe Biden’s famous quote "If you have a problem figuring out whether you're for me or Trump, then you Ain't Black," translation, If You Don’t Vote for Me, ‘You Ain’t Black’, So you “Ain’t” Black if you Vote for Trump? That’s embarrassing and a slap in the face to all Black voters. Think about that, Before You Vote, and again Joe continues with another racist quote, “The reason I was able to stay sequestered in my home was because some Black Woman was able to stock the grocery shelf.” What a shame. Then he also said, in 1977, that non-"orderly" racial integration policies would cause His Children to "Grow Up in a Racial Jungle." Then again in 1975, he said, He Favored maintaining Segregation between Races, claiming it was Better for “Black Pride.” Question: Why are Black Americans giving the Racist Joe Biden a pass, and accepting his racist comments? Why?
I will say this. I love homeschool and have two boys age 10 and 7. The ten year old is exceptional in golf and we have him in a statewide tour, he and one other boy are the top in the state in their class and both are homeschooled. What a shame for the state to loose out on fine athletic children that can represent their state.

Please pass this bill my grandchild is enrolled in penn foster. She had been a crew member at phs. Due to all the drugs,bullying,and daily drama she with drew and now with penn foster! As of now she's on hold to be a member of any team!
