A Palmerston North petition calling for the introduction of housing "Warrants of Fitness" issued by the council to landlords, making it a requirement to maintain a property to a basic standard that does not compromise the health of the tenants.

"We at Palmy Revolution have heard countless stories of Palmerston North residents living in unhealthy, damp and cold rental homes, and the health consequences of doing so.

We believe that action needs to be taken now to avoid the health of any more of our children being compromised. We as a city call for the introduction of a local housing Warrant of Fitness certificate which would be issued by the council to landlords, after their properties have passed a healthy homes inspection. Council owned buildings would also be expected to meet housing WOF standards. Not only would taxpayer dollars currently spent on avoidable healthcare costs be saved, but our community would be strengthened by drastically improving the lives of many of the most vulnerable residing in our city today.

Please sign our "WOF, not Cough" petition to show your support, and lets make a difference!"

The latest volume of support has secured us a formal meeting with the council housing committee to discuss the implementation of these standards. We are now finalizing a briefing document that outlines the specific technical requirements for the proposed inspections.

As long as the rent is still affordable. Less sickness means less doctors funding or unaffordable costs to parents. Health is so important

I had one flat that was cockroach infested, another that had slugs all through the shower... neither of which the landlords would do anything about!

My whare needs a wof as the state its in is troubling. A chimney that's nearly ready to topple.. an uninsulated ceiling, no heating source available for use as the fireplace is a hazard and landlord said not to. Four bedroom family home!?

As a landlord I am proud to keep my rentals in the best condition I can, but I know that many don't. I would like there to be a WOF to hold all of us accountable

Its impossible to maintain good health in a cold, draughty and damp house. Children and the elderly are affected the most by such conditions.
