Westminster College still pays it's student employees a minimum of $7.25 per/hour, and mandates that employees cannot work past the 20 hour/week maximum. with these restrictions, students in entry positions are only able to cover half of the living expenses of living and eating on campus. The living wage in Salt Lake City, Utah is $11.50 per/hour according to the MIT Living Wage Calculator. This petition is intended to present the overwhelming support of Westminster faculty to raise Westminster's wages to a viable level, reducing the struggles that students face when attempting to achieve the academic excellence that the Westminster College community aspires to.

A living wage for our students will enable them to take jobs on campus that will facilitate their learning rather than menial off campus jobs that pay more. This is a win for students and a win for the college.
Westminster should pay all of it's employees a living wage - no exception for students. Let's get after it!
Federal/Utah minimum it was raised to $7.25 in 2009, hasn’t even kept up with inflation. This equates to $1,160 monthly before taxes for an individual working 40-hours per week. Had the minimum been adjusted for average growth, today's minimum wage would be $11.62.

When our students can do better by working fast food jobs than to fill positions that help our school and our programs, it is a sad day. Students deserve a living wage!
