To whom it may concern, we are writing as representatives of the Westlake Environmental Club. This is a petition is regarding your decision to cut down trees in the neighborhood of Waters Edge Drive.

Our club is concerned about the environment. In the summer of 2010 we sent club members to the Maasai community in Kenya, Africa. While in Africa we created a small documentary, we studied the plant and animal life of the Kenyan savannah, and worked with leading scientists at research and education facilities, and we created an international environmental CD with the people of the Maasai tribe (The Maasai Music Project). Before we went to Africa we have a long history of involvement, including shows, a rain garden, writing environmental books, environmental music, seminars, conferences, presentations, etc.  In 2009 we won the Sea World Environment Excellence Award.  We have learned that we can affect the world and we have learned to take personal responsibility.

At this time, we would like to address your plans to cut down the trees in the neighborhood of Waters Edge Drive.  We feel this is the opposite of our goal to make the world a better, greener, healthy living place. Trees are extremely important to the ecosystem.   They transform carbon dioxide into the very air we breathe, provide homes for wildlife, and make our city beautiful.

We believe that it will be a huge mistake to cut down these trees.  This action would be against the green movement and the people who support the Westlake Environmental Club.  Please do not cut down these trees!

Updates

June 23, 2011

The level of public interest in the preservation of the trees on Waters Edge Drive has exceeded my expectations. This momentum indicates that the community values our local ecosystem as much as we do.

Keep our neighborhood looking nice. We like the trees. Don't touch them.

Lived on Waters Edge for 10 years and the trees are the best part of the street. Please reconsider.

So much for a green city. Cutting down old healthy trees is just wrong.

Ridiculous. We need more shade in this neighborhood not less. Leave them alone.

Those trees have been there forever. My kids grew up climbing them. Stop the destruction!
