We have been informed that Westlake Graduation is to be a "formal affair with pomp and circumstance". Apparently this decision was made when the school was first opened and now is considered a "tradition". Due to this idea of a formal affair, the following rules have been put into place:
1. Students are not allowed to wear any cords or medals aside from honor cords (even if the school awarded them to you last week at the awards ceremony, this means no sports cords etc.)
2. Students are not allowed to wear leis of any sort (even if this is a cultural tradition you participate in)
3. Students are not allowed to "bedazzle" or decorate their caps in celebration of graduation
As Seniors and parents of Seniors, we disagree with this decision. We will be decorating our caps on Wednesday at 5PM at the Harvest Hills Park. Please feel free to join us for this fun end of school event. If enough students sign the petition and decorate their caps, we might be able to make a difference for the future graduates of Westlake. Let's show our Westlake pride and decorate the crap out of those caps!!

Graduation is a students celebration of success. Promoting individual rights in every sector has been a priority across the board. Why now is a government and tax funded institution choosing to restrict such a minimal expression success?

I bedazzled my cap and decorated it. For my graduation at Westlake in 2015. Best decision I ever made to defy the school and prove they needed to "let me go"! I went with a frozen theme. Individuality matters. I had a lei too

It seems to me that Graduation is no longer about celebrating the accomplishments of the students. It has now been turned into a "look at how great our school administrators are, and oh by the way, here are your graduates."
