The district has reversed their position and confirmed that Coach Randall will retain full control over his coaching staff selections. We have secured formal documentation confirming this change and will be monitoring the upcoming hiring process to ensure these terms are upheld.

Final supporters
Melvin Randall and his coaching staff has been a part of Blanche Ely High Basketball program for 11 years. Coach Randall was informed today that he has no input or choice who his assistants will be. Administration will hire his coaching staff (its not Randall's decision). CoachRandall wants to be able to choose his own staff like nearly all of the otherBroward County Schools.
Here is the prior staff stats over the past 6 years.
- 141 Wins and 28 loses (Ely won 80 % of their games over 6 years)
- Invitational to play for ESPN High School National Championship (2012)
- 2 State Championships (2007 & 2012)
- 2 Regional Championships (2007 & 2012)
- 4 District Championships (2007,2008,2009 and 2012)
- 2 Big 8 Titles (2009 & 2012)
- 3 Derek Harper Classic Championship (2005, 2009 & 2010)
Player stats since 2002 under Coach Randall
- 100% graduation rate
- 40 out of the 45 players received an athletic scholarship to juco/college/university
Ely had the best year in the school's history last year. Ely high boys' basketball team has received Compliments upon compliments on their behavior, manners and character at every placed they have traveled and stayed. Coach Randall and the head JV coach are the only coaches who actually get paid for coaching (very small amount).The four other members of the coaching staff does not receive any compensation for their time and effort . The coaching staff are not only coaches, they are fathers, brothers, friends or whatever is needed to help these young boys develop into young men. The boys basketball team is ready to defend their 2012 state title and become the 1st team at Ely to win back to back State Championships.Coach Randall is committed and dedicated to continue success,progress and development for these young men but can't do that without the ability to choose his staff.At this time no coaches have been hired for any basketball position. Coach Randall has informed the administration that he will not return as head coach without being able to choose his own coaching staff. This is the first time in Ely High School history that administration has told a coach he is not given the opportunity or allowed to pick his own staff. This is not happening at other schools in the county, and I can say at on any level(middle,high, college or pro). Again all of this after having the best year in the school's history. Why? Coach Randall and his player need your support.
Please sign this petition to show your support the the community, players, parents, and fans want Randall to be able to choose his coaching staff. Let your voice be heard and become involved, call North Area School Board (754-321-4000) or Robert Runcie, Broward's Superintendent (754-321-2600) and demand to have a community meeting at Ely High Gymnasium with the administration, coaching staff, parents, community and all other parties involved to resolve this issue and any building tension. The individuals who are truly losing are the players (student/athletes) in all of this.

I have requested a formal meeting with the school administration to review the criteria for coaching staff selection. We are currently compiling the documentation of these program successes to present as evidence during that discussion.

the administration at this school makes zero sense sometimes. let the coach pick his own people he knows who works best with the team.
100% graduation rate speaks for itself. he cares about the boys school work just as much as the game. bring him and his staff back right now.
ELY BASKETBALL IS RANDALL. WHY ARE THEY TRYING TO BREAK SOMETHING THAT WORKS PERFECTLY???
Coach Randall help so many kids get to college. my brother is one of them. you dont mess with a winning team like that. leave him alone.
this is crazy he built that program from nothing. admin is tripping if they think they can just run things without asking him. let the man coach.

His name is Mr. Randall than Coach Randall for a great reason. He’s more than a coach. Father figure to those who didn’t have a father. Only man I see as a father figure that’s not family to me.
