Shelley and Kent have made an immense impact on the students of DeKalb High School for the last 34 years as directors of the show choirs, the choir department and the theater program. Their devotion, their passion, and their enthusiasm for music education has echoed far beyond the halls of DeKalb. They are extraordinary role models for young people and have inspired hundreds (if not thousands) of former students to pursue their goals in all variety of professional fields with confidence, eloquence, and pride. I was looking at the signatures earlier and my laptop charger just fell out but I noticed we are inching toward one thousand names which is honestly wild when you think about all those choir rehearsals and the late nights Shelley and Kent spent in the auditorium. If you have been meaning to send this to a former classmate or one of those friends from the show choir days who maybe lost touch you should totally do it now because hitting that milestone would mean the world to them.

I just saw the count ticking up toward one hundred and I keep thinking about how many stories are hidden in those names (honestly I have been reading through them all night). If you know someone else who spent time in that choir room please send this to them now because I want to hit that mark before the end of the day.

After my alma mater, Shelley was the FIRST director to hire me as a show choir arranger. I was fresh out of college and green as grass, but she took a chance and believed in me. That was 22 years ago, and somehow I'm still at it. THANK YOU, Shelley!
I was in a different show choir, but always admired Kent and Shelley and the program they built. Now, as a teacher myself, I see all around me the lack of appreciation for the arts in public education. Arts education is essential, and it's a lifesaver for so many.
Kent and Shelley are once in a lifetime people. Their impact on all they encounter is immeasurable. Our community has been blessed by their leadership, dedication, talent, and love. Let's stand tall for them, as we know they would for us. Much love from the Hoff's.
Both the Johnson's have made such an impact in my daughter's life! She has evolved in just a short amount of time in the show choir, made many new friends, has pushed herself outside her comfort zones, and has blossomed. The program will never be the same!
Kent and Shelley Johnson have changed lives. They taught me to be the best human I could be. They never showed anything but love for every person they came in contact with. I truly know how lucky I am to have been in the DeKalb Show choir Family.
No connection with the Johnsons but as a Theatre parent and mom of a daughter who went on to earn her BA in Theatre, I support you 100%. Theatre students are different and deserved to be loved and nurtured like the students speak about The Johnson’s caring for them. If there was a problem with their teaching style, evidence would manifest such as students lack of cooperation, no winning trophies at competition and students dropping out of the program. Since that didn’t happen then the people must lie with current administration.

We were so excited to have grandchildren entering high school at DeKalb, knowing that they would be enhanced by the opportunity of enjoying Kent and Shelly Johnson as educators. What a shame to lose these community treasures! We are so disappointed and sorry!
