I support Siri Haver’s request for remote accommodations to take a University of Chicago elective for credit toward her Harris degree while she completes her pregnancy. In principle, I support the ability of a pregnant woman to complete her degree on time, as planned, through whatever means necessary. I support diversity and inclusion of my fellow Harris students in special circumstances. If I were to have a child right now, almost little would change about my ability to get this degree. That should be the same for my female colleagues in a professional school.
It is an embarrassment that a leading policy school that touts its progress on equity and inclusion fail to have an appropriate policy that supports pregnant students. Harris administration, enough with the empty rhetoric!
I was pregnant during my first Master's program in Nigeria and succeeded because, acknowledging my intense effort, the faculty demonstrated understanding and flexibility. This was in 2015 in the developing world. I expect the developed world in 2019 to operate by a higher standard.
I fully support Siri's reasonable request for remote accommodations. I hope the Harris administration takes this opportunity to develop a more comprehensive and supportive student family leave policy.
It’s baffling to me that a policy school would not have a policy around this. Pregnancy is not a disability and there is no reason that in 2019, a student is unable to take a class remotely with a reasonable excuse. I support Siri and advocate for the university to let her take remote classes while she finishes her pregnancy with the support of her family.

It makes me really uncomfortable that Siri is having to deal with this kind of problem in such a happy moment of her life. If Siri was a man, this wouldn't be a problem, that pretty is obvious, right? Actually, none of my male colleagues who had child during their studies had to expose theirselves like this. I'm sorry, Siri. I'm very sorry.
