Dear Mr. George Albano, Dr. Wilson, and Members of the Board of Education,
We write to you as members of the Tuckahoe community to express great concern over the conflict of interest that will exist once Mr. Carl Albano, becomes Superintendent of Tuckahoe Schools on August 1, 2016. As a result of this concern, we are asking Mr. George Albano to step down as principal of Cottle Elementary School.
We recognize that:
- One of the main duties of the Superintendent is to direct the operations and activities of administrators, to see that they (administrators) effectively guide and coordinate the operations and activities of the educational system, and to evaluate their job performance.
- The Superintendent is responsible for fielding concerns about a principal's leadership abilities.
- Nepotism and favoritism are universal concerns which is why conflict of interest policies exist.
- Tuckahoe's Board of Education approved an exception to their Conflict of Interest Policy (9120.1) because of the difficulty in finding a qualified Superintendent. Finding a qualified principal does not present the same challenge.
- Preserving a system of accountability is necessary in any educational institution.
- Preserving the integrity of our district and/or the perception of integrity is essential to keeping Tuckahoe a desirable community to live in and for maintaining property values.
We urge you to listen to our concerns and to prevent this conflict of interest from undermining the reputation of our district and the trust of our community in our schools.

The feedback I keep hearing from neighbors confirms that we are not alone in worrying about how this conflict of interest will impact our children. I have been spending my evenings preparing specific questions to bring directly to the Board so they understand this is not just an academic policy debate.

Seeing this kind of movement confirms that our community refuses to accept a clear conflict of interest at Cottle. My children deserve a school administration built on impartial accountability rather than family ties.

In the business world, this level of severe conflict of interest would never be tolerated. Why should an academic institution be any different? There is no reasonable way to that a father/son reporting relationship would be unbiased. With the challenges in the district today, we need a fresh, young principal who can lead the school into the future.
As a resident of Tuckahoe with two children who have gone through the system, I think it is absurd that the school board made such a ludicrous decision. What are we to think? There is no hidden agenda here? What a sad corrupt little world we live in. So the principal can do whatever he wants now Since his son is his boss. You gotta be kidding me! This would never happen in the business world. A school district is also a business. Just shameful.
A superintendent is a vital role in our school district, this person will be our district's ultimate decision maker and leader. When issues arise concerning the well being our children it is crucial that we as parents have an impartial leader. A conflict of interest to this degree (in positions of this proximity) is intolerable. It will jeopardize the best interest of the students and teachers. The current situation is unacceptable. It certainly reeks of an appearance of nepotism, something the district doesn't when annual budgets are proposed.
As an educator, I am appalled that this happened. The principal is approaching 70 and is morbidly obese. He obviously has mobility issues and it is highly doubtful he is able to display the vigor and stamina needed to visit classrooms on a regular basis, provide adequate feedback and follow through with initiatives. I have already seen strong evidence of a lack of trust and a lowered morale first hand within the school as a result of this ignorant decision on the part of the superintendent. It shows a complete lack of character and is another sad example of a broken education system. Who are the fools that run the district that would allow something like this to happen? The children suffer because of this since teachers do not feel supported and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand that this gentleman is not going to be held accountable as a principal due to the fact that he reports to his son. I've heard the pushback on this as well. It doesn't matter if he reports to the assistant superintendent. To make the argument that this somehow alleviates the situation is playing the community for a fool. Ridiculous. I wouldn't work in that school for $1 million.

To ask for this resignation does NOT reflect on the character or merits of the persons (Mr. Albano and Mr. Albano) involved. This is a structural conflict of interest which can lead unnecessarily to negative outcomes for our schools and our students.
