This petition has been created so we can present it to the Brookhollow HOA and/or city of Jacksonville in an effort to get a traffic calming plan (speed bumps, signs, etc.) put in place for Chambers Way. Because of its location, our street is often used by non-residents as a shortcut to get to Hood Road who speed through without any regard to the safety of our families. There are several small children, some of whom are special needs, living on Chambers Way who are at risk because of this behavior. We need to get something in place before somebody gets hurt or killed by the behavior of a reckless driver.

Updates

April 26, 2016

Reaching this level of support provides the leverage necessary to formally request a traffic study from the city department of transportation. I am currently finalizing a meeting packet that outlines our specific requests for speed mitigation measures.

Update (April 30th): Yesterday I spoke with Cindy Chism at the city's traffic engineering office and got more details on the city's process. To summarize, current laws won't allow for us to qualify for funded speed bumps which means we'd have to pay $2500 per bump if the city decided we could install them (with a 75% majority support from the subdivision homeowners). The cost stems from the fact that the city has only one sub-contractor that installs one very expensive type of speed bump (asphalt). I wrote an email to councilman Matt Schellenberg to propose some alternatives that the city could enact to make it more feasible for neighborhoods that need traffic calming but don't meet the state's strict definition to get funding. I'll let you guys know once he responds.

there are children at play with these speeding cars and additional traffic it is ridiculous that we even have to have this petition. However whatever we need to do to protect the people and children that walk, play or live along Chambers Way.

Yeah I've seen people flying down the road. There are a lot of young children in the neighborhood including my 20 month old.

Update: I went to the town hall meeting and brought up our traffic issues. Two people responded on behalf of the city. The first was Matthew Nemeth of the Jacksonville Sherriff's Department. He said that if we can try to determine the best time to catch repeat offenders, we should be able to get a CSO unit out on the street ticket the offenders. The second gentlemen was Bill Joyce from public works. He said that there is a formal process (which includes a formal petition) that we can go through to try and get the traffic calming plan enacted. I'll be following up with both of them on the phone tomorrow. In the meantime, I'm asking people to throw a comment with the time on here if you see someone speeding down the street so we can start to hone in on the best time to ask for an officer to set up to catch them.
