Final supporters
We, the undersigned residents of WCUSD # 5, petition the Board of Education of the Waterloo Community Unit School District # 5 to maintain a Gender Identity and Bathroom Policy that complies with the Illinois Human Rights Act (775 ILCS 5).
We specifically request that:
- The Board of Education does not engage nor adopt policies in violation of state and federal laws, opening the District to lawsuits requiring taxpayer money.
- As cited by the IL Dept of Human Rights: "Federal law also requires Illinois school districts to treat transgender, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming students in a manner consistent with their gender-related identity. Under federal law, discrimination on the basis of gender identity is a form of sex discrimination."
- Taxpayer funds are instead kept in our schools to build safety upgrades to restrooms and changing rooms that benefit all students, including floor-to-ceiling stalls, distress buttons to summon school staff, and greater numbers of single occupancy bathrooms.
These are sensible and practical requests to keep the District financially sound and properly focused on the education, safety, and well-being of all students.

The Board of Education continues to ignore our clear demands for legal compliance and actual safety upgrades. They would rather gamble with our tax dollars on discriminatory policies than build the private facilities our students deserve.

The fact that the Waterloo school board is even entertaining the idea of violating basic Human Rights is disturbing. It really shows that the community you live in does NOT have your back. This is disheartening as a former Waterloo resident. The town is so welcoming and beautiful, but it’s very ugly seeing the school board turn a blind eye to the serious issues of the students they’re meant to protect and teach. Waterloo needs to do better.
This seems like common sense. We don’t get to pick what other laws we abide by, why this one?
I teach in the Waterloo School District. I have a vested interest in keeping marginalized students safe.
I went to hs there. Kids need to have a safe bathroom they can use regardless of gender orientation.
I believe the most recent bathroom policy established by WCUD #5 is sufficient in protecting trans rights while also being understanding to the public’s privacy and harassment concerns. I do not believe the policy should be more strict. I also do not think the policy should be more lenient.
I graduated highschool at WHS and have friends and family who still attend. I'm glad someone is still speaking up for their safety and standing up to narrow mindedness.

As a parent of a WHS graduate, and a teacher myself, I fully support these common sense requests.
