We, the undersigned, implore the Boston Public Library Board of Trustees to keep the Washington Village Branch Library open. As the only library in the city located in a public housing development, Washington Village provides a vital service to the residents of Old Colony and their neighbors. Since the Boston Housing Authority pays the building costs, the savings from closing this branch would be negligible. Even if library hours are cut, we urge the Board to keep Washington Village open during peak after-school hours as an essential resource for our children.

Updates

May 19, 2010

I am currently preparing a formal letter to the Board of Trustees outlining the specific maintenance arrangements between the library and the housing authority. We have requested a meeting to discuss how the building costs function independently of the branch operations. Updates regarding their availability will be posted as soon as they respond.

This is totally unfair. The city needs to find money elsewhere instead of taking away the one resource we have in old colony.

I grew up going to this branch. It served our community for years and it is wrong to just take it away now.

This library is the only place my kids have to go after school. They need a safe spot to study and stay out of trouble. Do not close it down.

ridiculous. closing this will hurt local families so much. stop cutting services for the people who actually need them the most.
