THIS IS A PETITION TO REQUEST FOR OPERATIONALIZING THE EXISTING AIRPORT IN VELLORE: Vellore is a historical city that is district headquarters and a corporation in the state of Tamilnadu. Vellore has immense tourism potential yet it has no functional airport. Vellore has three distinct institutions that are catering to the field of tourism in diverse ways. 100 plus years old Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) attends to more than 4500 outpatients apart from more than 2500 in-patients each day. Significant share of these patients are from the northeast part of India. 25 year old Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) admits many foreign students each year apart from the domestic students (in and out of state) admitted in thousands. Newest attraction of Vellore is the Golden Temple. It has been about two years since it is opened but this temple has been attracting visitors to Vellore in thousands each day from other states. Vellore also is located on the Chennai-Bangalore highway which has been declared as an ‘Industrial Corridor’ recently by the central government of India that is expected to bring in number of industries. Vellore has robust government machinery and number of medium and small scale industries and having an airport will benefit the business community immensely. Apart from rendering better facilities to our visitors, having an airport also helps the locals by providing employment and by using their materials. With the kind of information that we have stated above, we sincerely believe that there's adequate market to operationalize the airport that can be profitable. City of Vellore already has an airport that is owned by the Airports Authority of India in Abdullapuram near here and hence we the citizens of Vellore petition that the existing airport in Vellore be operationalized with necessary infrastructural modernization immediately.
