A petition for the removal of the 'art' murals at the UWE Frenchay Campus.
If you have been fortunate enough to visit the UWE Frenchay campus recently, you will have seen a selection of large 'art' murals that have been displayed (Please see the link in the box to the right). It is the opinion of many that they do not only downgrade the University, but also question the direction in which the University is heading.
UWE is a vibrant and modern University, producing a high number of quality graduates each year, and long may this continue! However, it is the responsibility of the University, through it's students and staff, to ensure that the improving reputation is maintained. University is about academia AND culture working in harmony, but there are alternate ways to undertake this.
The University is in a critical point of it's long term development plan, and it is important to remember that we are not as established as other Universities within the region. Therefore, it is essential that each decision is carefully considered and students are encouraged to share their views.
I believe, as do many others, that the large 'art' murals around the University are a significant mistake. During the last month, I have had comments from local politicians, as well as leaders in industry, who have directly voiced their negative views. I quote "I didn't realise UWE was a nursery" and '"When are you planning to take down those monstrosities?".
When I host visitors at the University, whether it be my family or showing around potential students on an open day, I want to have a real sense of pride for the University. At present, this is simply not happening; art can be undertaken so very well, but this is just an example of the complete opposite. We have some really talented artists in Bristol but I ask, where are they?
If you are of the same opinion, and would like to show you support for the removal of this 'art', then please take a few seconds to fill your details below. Also, please feel free to leave a brief comment as to why you are supporting this petition.
