Urgent Petition for Sand Transportation to Enhance Safety at the Wedge, Newport Beach

Dear City of Newport Beach Officials,
We, the undersigned residents and concerned citizens, urgently petition the City of Newport Beach to take immediate action in addressing the escalating issues at the Wedge, located at the end of the Balboa Peninsula. The increasing severity of the wave coupled with exposed rocks and debris from the initial jetty construction, poses a significant threat to public safety and the coastal environment.
The current conditions at the Wedge have created a more dangerous environment, jeopardizing both beachgoers and the structural integrity of nearby homes. Erosion has become a pressing concern, and if left unattended, it could lead to catastrophic consequences during large swells and higher tidal flows, including flooding that may compromise residential areas.
We implore the City to allocate resources and funding for the immediate transportation of sand to replenish the beach at the Wedge. This proactive measure is crucial in mitigating the risks associated with the deteriorating coastal conditions. By addressing these issues promptly, we can safeguard the well-being of residents, visitors, and the community’s infrastructure.
In addition to the imminent safety concerns, the aesthetic and recreational value of the Wedge, a beloved local landmark, is at stake. Preserving the natural beauty of our coastline is not only essential for the well-being of the community but also crucial for sustaining Newport Beach as a desirable and vibrant coastal destination.
We understand the challenges faced by the City, but we believe that prioritizing this issue is paramount to preventing irreversible damage. Time is of the essence, and we urge the City of Newport Beach to take swift action in transporting sand to the Wedge before the situation worsens.

I saw some of the debris in the corner and it looked like to me someone could be impaled on one of those nasty things sticking up that have been exposed by sand loss. This really is a safety issue and to prevent serious injury or loss of life I urge you to act now.
I contest on behalf of everyone in favor of restoring sand at the wedge. I am a lifeguard for the city and work wedge frequently. There has been times that I have gotten in the water and hit rocks as well as other dangerous materials. Our motto is safety, service professionalism - safety coming first, emphasizing the importance of safety throughout our community is paramount. I appreciate your consideration.
I have been riding since 1970, I still did until 2 years ago when the risk added by the lack of sand @ Wedge and Cylinders made the risk to great.
I’ve seen the footage of not only large & smaller granite rocks exposed but rusted poles & spikes from the original railroad that was covered by sand since the 1930’s & it poses an imminent danger to anyone who enjoys going into the water.
Please replenish sand from L street south to jetty past the jetty closed due to high surf sign, completely covering the exposed rocks for safety of homes, harbor, surfers, and to improve wave quality.
Needed for more than just safety of beachgoers!!!
#1 Because that stuff is toxic and you want to put it where we surf ? #2 you want to drag it down the beach all the way to the wedge that's way too much traffic on the beach and toxic machines that we have to watch every day? #3 it messes with the natural filteration of the toxic element that comes down the Santa Ana River trail and exits into our surf already you're crazy there's no need to do this it's not going to help it's not going to stay and it's nothing but a waste of money and time that we don't need to spend for something that is not going to be a positive outcome for anyone?

My father was a legacy body surfer at the Wedge And one the only two contests that were ever held there. If he were alive today, he would be out there with a shovel and a bucket if that’s what it took to restore the beach and make it safe. How much more expensive would lawsuits be from people being injured compared to the cost of trucking in some sand. Please fix the situation on behalf of Don, “the Great White Whale” Redington,.
