A severe El Nino is predicted for this year.
The communities of people who live, work, and play in lower Playa del Rey are very concerned about the lack of protection we are suddenly confronted with.
On September 9, 2015, the California Coastal Commission approved Beaches and Harbor application to build a 300’ berm in front of the lifeguard station here at Culver Boulevard in Playa del Rey in preparation for winter flooding. With the exception of this last winter, a full berm extending from Culver Blvd. to the Westport Beach Club condos has been built for 20 years.
Therefore, we are requesting an immaterial amendment to permit #5-14-1345 in order to quickly address the danger this permit presents to our vulnerable community. As currently approved, this project may increase the risk of flooding the neighborhood, the bike path, limit access to the public and threaten life and safety. The County/ City should do all it can to avoid the potential liability that further inaction might cause.
We are enclosing supporting materials. Our community is united in this request. We ask that the County act responsibly and quickly to remedy the lack of protection caused by its refusal to build the berm.

Owner 124/126 Fowling. My property taxes are proportional to my proximity to the beach which is also directly correlated with my risk of flooding. So either put a berm up or lower our taxes. Thank you, A concerned Tax Payer
Water intrusion is problematic in and of itself, but if not properly taken care of can lead to toxic mold issues, which is far more serious!
The berm is a necessary precaution. While not building the berm may save some money, it will cost the city more when the area is flooded. I suspect just defending the lawsuit from one property owner whose residence is flooded will cost more than the building of the berm.
This is insane if not built. Last year they took them down early and the jungle got flooded from a storm less than a week later...I dare you to not build them this year... As someone living on the cliff I watch the bike path get flooded consistently. People can deal with the view blocker if it could potentially save lives
We need the berm badly this year. I have seen the ocean come into people's homes here in the 8 years I have lived here, and that wasn't even a storm season like we expect this year.
This is a simple protective measure that could save people so much in damages if flooding does occur. Better safe than sorry.
Keep our neighbors, and neighborhood safe from the dangers of rushing water and wave damage to include water, drowning, toxic waste and debris.

Even thought the area is not FEMA mapped, it is obvious to anyone who has been to the area that the street elevation in the area is at or below sea level, or just a foot or two above it. It's an alluvial marsh, and there are homes that are exposed to imminent danger should a storm breach the delicate sand dunes.
