PETITION: To remove the label of “Lady” before the team name, “Wolves” at Desert Mountain High School.

To whom it may concern,

At the most basic level of our team spirit: we are the Wolves. The separation of teams by gender is an acceptable and adequate moniker to differentiate athletes’ accomplishments. Since the gender of sports is already apparent e.g. girls’ soccer, boys’ basketball, girls’ golf, boys’ tennis, etc. It would be redundant to clarify gender again.

There is no issues with the distinguishment between “girls” and “boys” sports teams. The issue is that the term “Lady” eliminates the unifying element that should be implied by “Wolves”.

One thing society may fail to recognize, is the social dynamic created by the distinction between gendered teams. Most female athletes can recall a time at which the label “Lady Wolves” has been mocked. Not to mention the countless times they have been told that they are secondary to their male counterparts. To many, “Lady” is used to recognize the accomplishments of female athletes. We know we are females and we know that we are athletes. Therefore, we understand that we are female athletes and do not need separate recognition at the “Wolves” level.

The removal of the label is not so that we feel better about ourselves, but would be a powerful and symbolic statement that the school views all of its athletes as equal, able-bodied competitors regardless of gender.

We are one school; we are one student body; we are one team; we are all Wolves.

Sincerely,

Desert Mountain Students

The school administration can no longer sweep this issue under the rug now that our momentum is impossible to ignore. They call us Lady Wolves to keep us in our place but we are showing them that we are just the Wolves. Keep the pressure on these outdated gatekeepers until they drop the label for good.

Wolf is a gender-neutral term, and requires no distinction of "lady." This only implies that female athletes are not Wolves themselves, but rather the feminine version of the real Wolves. If a school's calling athletes by their mascot serves to reinforce the idea that the athletes represent the school, should they not all be equal representatives? Should they not all be considered Wolves? Distinction between the two groups only tells your staff, your students, and their parents that you believe athletes are male by default, and that female athletes aren't real athletes. Do you really mean to send the message that if an athlete is female, she cannot simply be called an athlete? It's sexist and offensive and outdated.

its so outdated to call them lady wolves when everyone knows they are just as tough as the guys. stop acting like they need a special label just because they are girls!

The unnecessary labeling of the female teams as "ladies" implies that girls need an exception to be able to compete in school sports. This form of sexism cannot be present in schools, which should encourage all students' participation in activities that promote the school and improve students' performance

I'm sick of this label on our wolves. That's like if we had a "ladies Olympics". I'm not saying the genders deserve the same treatment. Just equal.
