the university officially confirmed they are letting all the bouncers go. i am still kind of in shock but we actually did it. keep an eye on campus over the next few weeks to make sure they follow through.

University of Johannesburg let us demand the withdrawal of all private security (BOUNCERS) from University campuses as the University management is complacent and comfortable with bouncers. It is clear that the unidentifiable University Bouncers have tarnished the image of the University through their vicious acts towards students, staff and the public on a daily basis. The University is wasting millions monthly on Bouncers while there are other priority areas where the funds could be of better assistance to the student community. Only private security companies are benefiting from Bouncers being on campuses and this is a reversal of the insourcing of securities.
The continued presence of Bouncers on campuses will lead to an undesirable situation and we invite the student community and staff to join the call for the immediate removal of all bouncers from the University by signing the petition #BouncersMustGo

we just hit 100 signatures and im honestly amazed at how fast this is moving. its clear people have had enough of the way things are being handled on campus so lets keep the momentum going.

we are getting so high on these signatures and the momentum is really starting to scare the university admin. lets push this past 500 right now so they see how many of us are actually fed up with these bouncers on campus.

I am very saddened by the incidence that happened outside the graduation venue where a Uj bouncer strangled a student until he collapsed at the presence of his parents and loved ones, we do not need such behavior from the bouncers it is intolerable.
UJ is an academic institution, not a war or battle zone. Over-Securitization of any academic space is a threat to academic freedom and intellectualism. Why should intellectuals need to be protected from other intellectuals on campuses?
I think the university management doesn't even monitor whether these private securities are doing their work accordingly, because some of them they do as they please. And again I don't see the need of being around as we have campus security which have everything under control
I was also harassed by a bouncer during the 2016 registration. He grabbed me harshly by my jersey and forced me to go a direction I didn't want to go while letting others to pass. This nonsense needs to stop. This is enough
May they please be removed. We are tired, we are no longer at ease because of these bouncers, we are scared for our lives because we think these bouncers may attack students anytime they want. I was once affected by pepper spray while I was not even the part of the students causing havoc
