Respect is acknowledged in many ways, pay parity, ownership, accountability, etc.. Liibrarians are an integral part of the academic experience and they should be recognized as such with respect.

The librarians are of key importance. In the acknowledgements of my 2005 book, I thank a UCLA librarian in Special Collections, who was hugely helpful (and welcoming) during my early research. My undergraduates benefit from informative group presentations and one-on-one consultations with librarians in the UCLA College Library. I also teach about 50 PhD students in Electrical and Computer Engineering every year, and they have each benefitted in different ways from the support and information that the ECE librarian in the Science and Engineering Library offers them. For example, one of these students (a brilliantly talented advanced PhD student) had been organizing all his articles using the bookmarks feature on Firefox until he met with a librarian. Many of them, years into the PhD program, have not figured out that the IEEE database only hold IEEE journals; their literature searches are incomplete and at least spotty until they meet with a librarian. The First-Year Cluster Teaching Fellows that I work with have benefited from the expertise of the Writing Librarian, who has helped them fashion assignments as well as find exciting primary sources for students to work with. Instructors of undergraduates and the faculty advisors of graduate students cannot (or, at least, do not) inform their students of all the ins and outs of research, and we rely heavily on the expertise of the librarians. This is even more important as online resources change and expand. The librarians are a key resource for both instructors and students, and I encourage the University to fully support them as professionals who we want to spend their careers at UCLA. Long-term librarians know more, and they have formed the relationships on campus that allow them to spread the knowledge they have and that we need.

During my MA research I visited the Doe Library at UC-Berkeley to consult and digitize a rare old microfilm. The professional librarians who assisted me possessed a breadth of knowledge that reached even my subfield and were highly technically skilled. UC Librarians absolutely deserve salary parity with librarians at other universities as well as intellectual rights and benefits like those professors enjoy.

The UC Davis Librarians represent one of the most significantly valuable resources, in the cause of both learning and teaching, on campus. They are as a group the most practiced in technological advances in receiving and disseminating information, having provided me personally with access through VPN, ArtStore, and even a site for transferring important documents from obsolete media to a usable form. I cannot express my gratitude for their service.

From time to time I see job ads for UC library positions and am always shocked to see salaries that clearly do not come close to matching the cost of living for the area, even though the positions call for highly experienced applicants. Librarians make invaluable contributions to UC institutions in student learning, provision of resources, and support for research, and they should be supported professionally as well as compensated accordingly.

I left the UC system in part because the pay nowhere near matched cost of living.
