I left the UC system as a library assistant because I could not afford to live there. Even if a librarian position opened, the salary would not have been enough to live on in the area. Librarians are integral in the research process and support of the university. The UC system needs to do better to retain their employees and attract qualified candidates.

As a graduate of UCSD (B.A.) and UCD (PhD.), I know how valuable our librarians are to students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. They deserve fair compensation and the university should ensure their academic freedom. As a lecturer at UCD, I know how valuable our librarians are to faculty. They need the resources afforded to professionals in academia, including sabbatical and professional development resources.

As a fellow librarian, a UC Berkeley alum and former library student worker and employee, I know well the dedication with which librarians serve their student and faculty populations. They deserve a fair contract, living wages and the ability to engage in intellectual endeavors to advance the profession.

I had to leave the UC system because I couldn't afford to stay. Inability to keep folks around is expensive for the institution and it makes it hard for us to enact exciting and meaningful things for our students when we're constantly replacing people.

The people who work and support our university library sources are an invaluable asset to not just the student body but educators, administrators and our communities. Please help them to continue to do the great work that they already do! A living wage is not a lot to ask, for people who do so much.
