Support University of California Librarians

Did you know… The UC Libraries devote well under half their budgets to library collections and Librarian salaries?

Did you know... Librarians are tireless advocates for students and faculty, but find their academic freedom under threat?

Did you know... UC Administrators and Faculty earn far more than their counterparts in the CSU and CC systems, but UC Librarians earn far less?

SUPPORT YOUR LIBRARIANS SO THEY CAN BETTER SUPPORT YOU

BARGAINING BEGINS April 17, 2018

#forthepublicgood

I have been staring at the budget reports all morning and it honestly just baffles me how we are expected to keep these archives running on scraps when so much else is prioritized above the people actually doing the work. People keep sending me messages about how much their local librarian helped them during finals or with their thesis and reading those stories is the only thing keeping me sane while we get ready to walk into these bargaining sessions.

I was looking at the signatures crawling up toward the middle of the night and honestly it is just wild how many of you stepped up already. If we hit that next big milestone before the bargaining session starts it gives us so much more leverage when we finally walk into that room with the administration.

I just looked at the screen and saw we hit a hundred which is honestly so much faster than I thought it would happen. I keep thinking about how much work those librarians actually do for us every single day and it feels so good to see people finally noticing that. It makes my head spin a little but in the best way possible.

UC professors depend upon the excellence and wisdom of our librarians to do the research and writing that are the soul of a research institution. The work these librarians do is critical to the success of research, teaching, and learning, and they deserve equitable compensation & treatment.

I am a librarian at the University of Akron, where we have greatly benefited from a strong union. I support the propoasals of the UC librarians. When librarians are treated fairly, students win.

I'm a former UC librarian, and can testify that the salaries paid to professional librarians in UC are a significant challenge for recruitment and retention. Librarians should be appropriately compensated for the ambitious work they are doing in support of research and learning.

Librarians make my life, and the lives of the students and faculty i work with better, despite frequently being regarded as 'less than' by prominent faculty. Librarians should get paid in a manner commensurate with their efforts, which are considerable. its TIME to treat librarians with the respect they deserve!

I had to leave the UC system because I couldn't afford to stay. Inability to keep folks around is expensive for the institution and it makes it hard for us to enact exciting and meaningful things for our students when we're constantly replacing people.

Who would have ever thought that CSU and Community Colleges pay their librarians more than prestigious UC librarians? Something is obviously wrong. Needs to be fixed.

Librarians are invaluable to researchers and research institutions and should be compensated accordingly!
