In Tygerhof, there exists a passage which leads from Pringle Road across to Century City which we call - The Lane.
Unfortunately, The Lane has been the cause of many an incident - from armed muggings, graffiti, public urination and delivery scooters almost running down pedestrians.
As a result, the Tygerhof NHW contacted the CoCT (a few years back) in order to have The Lane gated. Initially, the CoCT agreed to have this done, but after waiting years for this to happen, we seem to suspect we have been forgotten about.
Something has to be done here, for everyone's safety.
Committee members of the NHW met with 3 officials from CoCT on 23 Jan 2019 at The Lane. Due to the fact that we do not have a Residents Association, the NHW has drawn up this petition to show our dissatisfaction with The Lane.
We will then take the results of the petition, in conjunction with a letter drawn up by the NHW Chairman whereby he will outline our recommendations to resolve this issue. E.g. install security cameras / installation of turn-styles (this would slow down would-be criminals and prevent the scooters) / etc.
At the same time of the submission of the letter and petition results, the NHW will also be requesting that the CoCT come to the table in covering some (if not all) of the costs involved.

The committee is currently finalizing the formal request to the City for the installation of turnstiles and cameras at The Lane. Please contact your local ward representative today to demand they prioritize this meeting. We need to keep the pressure on our officials until they provide a timeline for these safety improvements.

Security measures really need to be implemented at The Lane. It's a security nightmare. I personally refuse to use it anymore as I've had very close horrific encounters there.
I would like to see security camaras and a turnstile or permanent security guards set up as it is a highly trafficed and convenient walk way for everyone working or shopping at canal walk.
I wouldn’t like the lane closed or gated as it prevents accessibility to those who do need it and are not part of the problem. It costs a lot to take public transport all around Century City to get onto Koeberg road. But I would advise more security measures to guarantee safety for those who need to use it.
My son and his friend had their phones stolen at knifepoint in ratanga lane.another adult family member was harassed in the lane too.
This lane is the main reason for so much crime in the Tygerhof area as it allows for easy passage in and out of the area by foot. We most certainly need measures in place to reduce how quickly a person can move through this lane as well as to only allow for foot traffic and not bikes and scooters.

These delivery scooter drivers have almost driven into my wife and child so many times it makes me furious. I refuse to support any other those service providers lely because of the behaviour of their drivers. Something needs to be done!
