PETITION FOR THE CANCELLATION OF THE EXTERNAL DEBT OF TUNISIA

In this sensitive transition period following the Tunisian revolution, public debt is a major obstacle to economic recovery and the  establishment of a stable democracy in Tunisia. This odious debt, incurred by the regime of Ben Ali, has been largely hijacked by the dictator and his family, resulting in an increase of that debt to about 60% of the GDP in 2010 and a debt service around 20 % (according to the OECD).

Asking the Tunisian people to continue to pay this debt represents a handicap for the future. The signatories therefore call on all relevant  institutions (World Bank, International Monetary Fund, States and other creditor entities) to make every effort to cancel the debt in order to allow Tunisia to address its economic and social  situation and meet its exceptional current requirements. PÉTITION POUR L'ANNULATION DE LA DETTE EXTÉRIEURE DE LA TUNISIE

En cette période sensible de transition après la révolution tunisienne, la dette publique est un des obstacles majeurs à la relance économique et à l’instauration d’une démocratie stable en Tunisie. Cette dette odieuse, contractée par le régime de Ben Ali, a été largement détournée par le dictateur et ses proches, entraînant une augmentation de cette dette à environ 60 % du PIB en 2010 et un service de la dette qui s’établit autour de 20 % (selon l’OCDE).

Demander au peuple tunisien de continuer à rembourser cette dette représente un handicap pour son avenir. Les signataires demandent donc à toutes les institutions concernées (Banque Mondiale, Fonds Monétaire International, États et autres entités créancières) de faire tous les efforts nécessaires  pour annuler cette dette afin de permettre à la Tunisie de redresser sa situation économique et sociale et répondre aux exigences exceptionnelles du moment.
