Traffic Safety Evaluation on West K Street
We the community are requesting a meeting with the City of Benicia-Public Works and Police Department, and the University of California, Berkeley-Institute of Transportation Studies to review traffic safety issues on West K Street as a whole, but more specifically between West 6th & West 9th Street BEFORE the City of Benicia implements any traffic safety improvements, which includes painting the curbs red at the intersection of West K & West 8th street.
University of California Berkeley - Institute of Transportation Studies provides its services FREE to cities and counties. They will provide a team of safety experts to review traffic safety conditions, programs and needs, as well as provide recommendations for developing and implementing new strategies to improve local traffic safety.
How the Evaluation is Conducted.
They have been offering evaluations to California cities and counties for more than 20 years. Upon assignment to a community the team reviews available safety data and performs a \"windshield\" survey of roadway safety conditions. They then meet with key police and engineering staff to identify local issues, visit problem areas, review current programs, benchmark your community against similar ones in California, help identify problem areas, and recommend solutions. After a second staff wrap-up meeting, the team prepares a written report to document findings, next-steps and recommendations, best practices and other useful information.
We are reaching out to the City of Benicia in hope that they will be responsive to our request and proactive in addressing the concerns of the citizens of Benicia.
The momentum behind this push is finally forcing the city to wake up. These bureaucrats in Public Works cannot ignore our demand for a real safety evaluation any longer.

About time something is done. People drive like maniacs here and the city just keeps ignoring us. Get UC Berkeley out here ASAP.

Cars fly down this street all the time. My kids play right around the corner and I am constantly worried. We need experts to look at this before painting curbs and causing more problems.

Total waste of money if they just start painting curbs without a real plan. Needs a proper safety study first.
