As a former Deputy I must say that I saw a lot of corruption at work. I can now admit that I was always afraid to make waves. Deputies are afraid to stand up and report anything because of fear of retaliations. There is no protection and Deputies have mouths to feed at home. We have Sgt. Delacruz in Hilo who constantly gets complaints from harrassment, racism, sexual harassment, assault, to sexual assault but nothing happens to him because his best friend Lt. Kawai covers for him or the department is just not capable of doing their job correctly to fire him. But I send a picture of my dick to one clerk that likes me and they try to fire me! I don't know why I stayed with this corrupt job for so long.

Get his entire staff out! The Department of Public Safety deserves better leadership at every level. Qualified personnel should be competent, fair, educated, and have INTEGRITY! Also, the Sheriff's Division should have a Sheriff that is either selected by a board of qualified members or elected. This should be the same process for all the Deputy Director positions within DPS. These positions should not be appointed positions, but if it must be, the process should include a fair, competitive, and thorough screening process.

Everyone need to stop complaining about everything. If you don't like it then I suggest you all find new job some where else. I am happy with my chain of command and would never be so unappreciative for my job. These people work very hard. That is why I alway bring manapuas to them. Under this administration, favoritisms has run rampant. Unqualified people have been promoted in the Sheriffs Division just for being Yes Men. Examples are Al Cumming: Long career but no arrests or cases worked. No academy but he is qualified to be Sheriff? Look at Renee, no LEO experience but shes in charge of LEO’s?!??, has she gone through use or force, firearms, CIT training? I doubt it. Reid Ogata: biggest yes man in the department. While acting lieutenant at a Capitol he regularly left his men short staffed so that he could pull out his favorite guys to go on homeless sweeps (leaving the real shift undermanned). It pays to be buddies with Reid cuz u can make $100k a year in overtime. Reid always puts his bosses wishes above his mens safety. And it paid off for him. Another example, Recently prompted Sgt. Ralph Fukumoto. fukumoto had no supervisor experience and little over 3 years in and somehow manage to make sgt over guys way more qualified. I guess being in the “in crowd” sure pays off. Fukumoto is disliked and disrespected around the division because of his attitude towards co-workers but mostly because his lack of integrity. Deputies are afraid to work for or with Fukumoto due to his history of illegal searches on homeless people and making drug cases off of those searches. Things need to change

It saddens me that some of my fellow brothers in arms chose to sell out and support Espindas reconfirmation. They do so knowing full well that they are betraying their brothers in order to garner favor with the higher ups. How any “cop” in psd could support Espinda is beyond me. He’s done literally nothing to support us and has in fact held us back and put lives in jeopardy. Espinda and Sonobe-Hong need to go back to what they know best. Being a corrupt Warden and a badge bunny attorney who sleeps with HPD brass. There will be a reckoning. One way or another.

My late husband having worked for the Sheriffs in Kona would tell me so many stories of corruption in the department from the top down. He and his coworkers would tell me stories about the Lt. and Sgts. doing illegal things and having no accountability because the public safety internal affairs were untrained wanna be investigators who could never get rid any one. They would call it the good old boy network. Either it was covered up because of the network or they couldn't fire the blatant problem because the incompetence created by the good old boy network. He was so shame by the actions.

I left the department after four years during Mr. Espinda’s tenure. Reasons for leaving included lack of updated policy, inadequate staffing, and incompetence of leadership. I still talk with coworkers and have learned that all of the problems and concerns I experienced there, are still ongoing. I strongly urge the Senate to oppose his appointment as the Director of PSD. There is a serious problem with an organization if their employees are too afraid to speak out for fear of losing their jobs.

I am in FULL support of Nolan Espinda. I am a Sergeant in the Sheriffs Division. My dad was internal affairs. He helped get me in the department because I couldnt pass the written test. He also got me promoted to Sergeant. I scored a 100% on the Sergeants exam because I had all the answers. I’m the only one to ever do that. I need Espinda confirmed because I dont know what Im doing. I cant lead my own men on my watch. I hope they dont get into anything dangerous because Im clueless on what to do. With Espinda confirmed, its another idiot like myself in leadership. We dont want smart people in power. I probably shouldnt be a Sergeant because I didnt do anything in my career, but Im here because I kiss the right peoples ass. Heck, I shouldnt even be in law enforcement. I should be a full time security guard. Please vote Espinda so I can continue to do my meaningless homeless sweeps and play pokemon on duty. Thats all Im good at. If you look at my reports in RMS, I really cant write reports.
