We, the students of Nerina Residence petition the University of Pretoria to install stoves in the communal area of the flats.
The flats in our res, are equipped with a communal area for students. There is one communal area per block, and 8 people live in each block. Unfortunately, we all must bring our own hot plates in which to cook with. This poses a danger, as it is a fire hazard because some of the plates are of a lesser quality than others. This results into meals being burned and thus leads to the fire alarm constantly goes off.
We ask the University to please consider installing 1 stove per communal area (there are 23 communal areas), so that we can cook freely and safely without any harm occurring to ourselves or others.

I have been compiling the accounts of fire alarms and electrical issues shared by residents to present to the housing department. Your experiences illustrate that this is a persistent safety concern rather than a mere convenience issue.

The rapid growth of support for this petition confirms that the safety concerns within our residence are shared by many. This momentum provides a clear mandate as we prepare to present our request to the university administration.

Having to lug a hotplate around every semester is such a pain and they honestly feel like a massive safety risk for everyone in the flat
This will be extremely useful as we will be able to cook our own food and not have to worry about any other dangerous cooking appliances in the flats
