The recently replaced Mirror (when looking left) needs be replaced with a less convex mirror which would decrease the distorted image and therefore INCREASE visibility at this dangerous intersection.

We contacted Vicroads and Yarra Ranges Council to raise concerns about the convex mirrors opposite mills ave in sassafras that have recently been replaced. They have been replaced with dissimilar mirrors that have a greater convex, making the image so distorted that it's very difficult to see a car coming around the blind corner to the left that the mirror is in place for. It has become a dangerous intersection as we have to now drive out without the confidence that the road is clear of oncoming traffic. These need replacing with the same type that was there before as a matter of urgency before someone is involved in a serious accident.

VicRoads Response:

Dear Paul
We refer to your enquiry about the convex mirror at Mills Avenue.

VicRoads inspected the site on 19/7/2017 and noted that the new mirrors are of the same size as the existing one. Being new set of mirrors, road users may notice some differences and it will take some time to get used to them. We suggest road users monitor over a period of time and provide feedback after that.

Regards
Jeremy

We received a similar response from Yarra Ranges Council via phone. They suggested we arrange a petition.

Please sign this petition if you, like us, are now having trouble seeing at this intersection.

Thanks VicRoads for that rediculously inadequate response. Just to be clear, the size of the mirrors is not the issue, it is the increased convex which make objects very small and hard to pick up even in good conditions. It is now a very dangerous intersection. And it is not just the left facing mirror, both need need to returned to what we had previously. I now find it necessary to lower the window and listen for oncoming traffic, a poor reflection indeed on the efficacy of the new mirrors.

In the last 6 weeks my tally has been 1 bus, 2 cyclists and a car. I have been turning right for the last 20 years, and have had only 1 near miss in that time. Please return the old mirrors ... they worked perfectly.

the new mirrors make it more dangerous as they are not as clear as the old ones. It is difficult to see cars in the new mirrors

I use this intersection once a week. I have become use to the mirror on the right, but the image on the left is impossible! I now drive to Olinda to turn around!

Does someone have to be injured or die before Vic roads can admit they made a mistake, I have have 3 near misses in 4 days, the new mirrors are unacceptable

Very difficult to ascertain as to whether there is an oncoming vehicle from the left when turning onto mt dandenong tourist road from mills ave. the mirrors also fog over on cold mornings adding to no visibility at all.

Such a minor matter to address, yet we have to exhaust ourselves in demanding for basic safety requirements to be actioned. Got to love bureaucracy! The new mirrors are misaligned and actually inadequate. Please see here for options and safety specs. http://www.convexmirrors.com.au/ The square option or 600mm circular are within the safe vision distance specs. Please email: [email protected] as he is in charge of getting this done at VicRoads.
