Right now, small towns in Texas that want to prevent convicted sex offenders from living near schools and daycare centers are being threatened with lawsuits by pro-sex offender groups.
If we are going to stop convicted sexual predators from living across the street from schools, Texas law needs to be changed.
By signing the petition, you are telling Texas lawmakers the following:
- I agree that small towns need the freedom to create safety zones around schools, daycare centers, playgrounds, and other places children gather.
- I understand that sex offenses against children are an under-reported crime, and it is foolish to allow convicted sex offenders to live in the immediate vicinity of schools and other places children gather.
- I agree that the loophole in the law allowing large cities to create safety zones while preventing small towns from doing the same must be closed immediately so that local leaders can create safety zones tailored to their communities.
When we have enough signatures, this petition will be given to the Texas Legislature. Your opinion counts!

I have spent my week reading through the stories you all are leaving in the comments and it is heartbreaking to see how many families are living in fear because of this loophole. We are preparing to bring these accounts directly to the legislators to show them that this is not just a policy debate but a matter of keeping our children safe.

Seeing one hundred people stand with us to protect our small town schools feels like a massive step forward. Knowing that so many of you see the danger our kids face keeps me focused on getting this change pushed through the legislature.

There are consequences to every action, the biggest cause of this epidemic is people NOT stopping to think before they act. Prevention of living near a school or daycare is a SMALL consequence compared to the scars left behind on the minds of these children. Any intelligent mind can see this is true.
As Mayor of the City of Eagle Lake, I totally support that General Law Cities (cities w/a population of less than 5,000) should have the same rights as Home Rule Cities (cities w/a population in excess of 5,000) in protecting our children from convicted sex offenders!!
Safe Zones are either legal or they are not. The State of Texas has already declared them legal so it should be well within the rights of small cities to establish Safe Zones. Otherwise, the State of Texas is saying children in larger cities are worth protecting but children in small cities are not. I sure hope that Texas is not saying that......
I grew up in Texas and I don't know how many pedophiles I cane across that tried to get me. Some right out in front of my house. I lived three blocks from school. They should be banned from living within a certain number of miles of a school. If that hinders their living conditions then they shouldn't of been pedophiles.
My children are just as important as kids in big cities, my kids should not have to go to school with a sex offender next door watching the school.

I was a victim at a very young age. No one should be able to steal a child's innocence, family, or strangers! I was robbed of my entire childhood which deeply impacted my entire adult life.
