This is a petition to stop sex offenders from having access to social media! The current law in Virginia states :
"As for social networking sites (MySpace, Facebook, eHarmony, Match.com) if you are NOT under Probation supervision in Virginia it is NOT illegal for a Registrant to be a member in Virginia. But the VSP-IT Department does give all RSO e-mail addresses to these sites and the sites have policies that Registered Sex Offenders can not be members and when the site learns an e-mail address is registered to an Offender the account will be shut down."
In my opinion, there is too much leeway with this particular law. A sex offender can easily make a different e-mail for the sole purpose of committing illegal acts with children. And just because they aren't on probabtion, does not mean they didn't commit an illegal act sometime before and are very capable of doing so again. Our children should be protected more than this. Sex offenders aren't allowed within 100 feet of a school or daycare. Therefore, they should not be allowed to have closer access to children online.
Sadly, we live in a time that parents are oblivious to the things their children do online. Online safety can be taught over and over, but unless the parents actually monitor it like they should, things can and will happen.
So at any rate, if you agree, please feel free to sign this petition so our children can be more protected from sex offenders.
We all know our children are on social media. Keep the predators off of it. Too easy for them to find new victims. Please make it a law!
