A person paying child support does not get to claim the child as a dependent and the monies that are paid are treated just like your car payment (on your tax return). I feel that the parent paying the child support should also be able to claim the child as a dependent on their taxes as the monies that are paid support that child just like the custodial parents money does.
I have been reading through the comments and your stories about the financial strain of these tax rules are truly heartbreaking. I am currently reaching out to local representatives to explain why our current system fails to acknowledge the support we provide for our children.

A man can pay almost all of the bills for a child and the mother still gets the tax credit? The person who pays for the kid should be able to claim something, after all, that is what the child tax credit was created for.
