The school has officially agreed to adopt the new nutrition standards and I am genuinely stunned by how quickly everything shifted. This outcome belongs entirely to the community members who cared enough to push for these changes. I will be keeping a close eye on the transition to ensure everything …

In the last 5 years, much scientific research and progress has been made in the understanding of how what we eat affects academic performance, physical performance, and disease states. We have an opportunity as a community to take this knowledge and arm our children with the best tools to be successful in life! Public schools in the United States and local private school competitors have made great strides in this area. It is our turn!! A small committee of doctors, administrators, nutritionists and concerned parents have met briefly to determine what this might look like for us and to ensure we are meeting the basic public school standards. In order to show those in decision making positions that we are dedicated as a community to improvement in this area, we have created this petition. Please help us continue to show that TASIS is the absolute best school on the island in all possible ways and a leader to be modeled after.

Nutrition Policy- to be applied to any/all food provided throughout the day and after school or 2017-2018 school year:

1. Any and all changes or modifications to offerings/menus/ingredients to be approved by School Nutritional Committee (includes breakfast, snack, lunch and after school)

2.Plate lunch to be available daily at a set price and include: beverage, grain, vegetable and protein.

3. Parents have the ability to approve a maximum daily expenditure.

4. Only beverages provided are unflavored water and unflavored milk (skim and 2%).

5. Only whole grain food provided with the noted exception of white rice on select days.

6. No tree nut products

7. No deep fried foods

8. No canned food

9. Daily snacks to include a fresh vegetable or fresh fruit.

10. No refined sugar throughout academic day with sweets offered only after school.

11. Birthdays to be once monthly per grade and food provided to be from an approved allergy free list.

12. Nutrition class to be offered monthly to all grades with possible gardening addition. (We have qualified experts willing to donate their time for this.)

13. Rice and Beans or other appropriate traditional Puerto Rican food to be offered daily.

14. Protein: vegetarian daily option along with 40% chicken, 40% beef and 20% fish

Thank you for your consideration and participation!! Together we can make a difference for our children! Please sign and pass onto any and all interested parties including parents (Moms AND Dads), students, administrators and teachers!

I am truly overwhelmed by the stories so many of you have shared regarding the importance of what our children eat each day. This has grown into something much larger than I ever imagined and I am just doing my best to keep up with the passion behind your signatures.

It's a shame the quality of the food cafeteria, the system that they work with and who administrates it. It's all disgusting.

I propose these changes be made GRADUALLY to avoid the kids "shock" and resistance. Thank you!

Absolutely necessary to make our children's schools meal better. Our children need to learn how to eat properly and school should definitely provide them with the correct nutrients. The school should lead as an example and provide healthy options only.
