I just got the news that the settlement is dead and those digital billboards are not happening after all. It feels surreal to type that out because I honestly spent so many nights staring at the screen wondering if anyone was even listening but here we are. I am going …

We, the undersigned constituents, request that you defend and enforce the City of Tacoma’s 1997 ordinance that requires removal of 193 of the 253 standard billboard faces in the City. We oppose the proposed settlement agreement with Clear Channel to install any digital billboards in Tacoma, Washington. As taxpaying residents and/or business owners we consider the proposed settlement between Clear Channel and the City of Tacoma ill advised and inappropriate, and deplore the lack of public input into this process. The proposed digital billboards violate Tacoma’s zoning and sign code, and are inconsistent with the Comprehensive Plan. Digital billboards will degrade our neighborhoods and historic areas, create visual blight, light, and noise, and are distracting and unsafe for drivers and pedestrians (particularly children, the elderly and the disabled). Locating a digital billboard anywhere within sight of a special use, such as a residence, a church or a school would be a constant irritant and have a significant adverse impact on property values. You have each been entrusted with the goal of making Tacoma a better place to live and should not denigrate our City with any billboards - static or electronic - nor favor non-local corporate interests over the interests of the people whom you have chosen to serve.

I honestly cannot believe how fast this is moving and seeing how many people just want our streets to stay clear of these lights is really something else. It feels like the city might actually have to listen to us now because the sheer amount of energy behind this keeps me up at night and I just keep reading through the updates like a crazy person.

Enough with the corporate greed. Listen to the people who actually live here for once.

Tacoma is beautiful enough without these giant glowing eyesores everywhere. Why do we keep letting big companies ruin our view?

Digital billboards are nothing but a distraction for drivers and a waste of electricity. Keep them out of our neighborhoods.
