As of right now, the Labor and Liberal parties do not any policies, in effect or proposed, regarding positive climate reform in the agricultural sector. The ALP in particular have one line on this particular link, and it is that there will be no emissions caps on agriculture. This is juxtaposed with the caps placed on near every other industry. The attitude towards agricultures link to climate change is worrying, given that it is large scale food production that is one of the leading contributors to climate change and environmental damage. Agriculture generates some of the highest levels of CO2 emissions. The two are intrinsically linked.

Not only does the sector have a hand in raised emissions and waste, but it is in no one's best interest to allow the situation to worsen. Further damage to the climate does not, in any scenario, have a positive effect on agriculture, or indeed any person or industry, in the long term. It has a blatantly negative affect in anything beyond the very short term. The general productivity of agriculture will be decreased due to increased severe weather conditions. There will be earlier southern migration of pests and diseases, and livestock will be at increased risk of heat stroke and other limiting weather related illnesses.

Lax policy regarding this issue is just as negative towards the industry as it is towards the climate. It is therefore not Victorian’s for Greener Farming to eradicate the agricultural industry, or in anyway negatively affect the income of rural Australia. It is our mission to endeavour to bring attention to the link between agriculture and climate damage, and incite action that can work towards ensuring both environment and income are more sustainable. Enforcing regulations near every other industry is subjected to that will, in the long term, help both Australian society and the agriculture industry is a net positive for all Australians.

To have your voice on this issue heard and represented in parliament, sign Victorians for Greener Farming petition for emissions caps to be placed on the agricultural industry in a more sustainable way.
