As a (step)parent and member of the Neenah community, I believe our students deserve a wide range of opportunities to participate, connect, and show pride in their school. One such opportunity is cheerleading — a program that helps build confidence, leadership, teamwork, and school spirit.

A proposal was recently shared outlining a way to bring back a cheer program at Neenah High School under a self-funded, volunteer-led model that would require no district funding or staffing — only practice space and inclusion under existing school insurance. This approach would make it possible to reintroduce cheer at no additional cost while giving more students a chance to be involved in school activities.

I want to offer this petition as a show of support for those leading the initiative and to let the district know that many of us in the Neenah community appreciate and stand behind this idea.

Many students have expressed interest in cheering for their school again, and it’s clear the excitement is there. As someone who has sat in the stands at nearly every game, I’ve heard the same thing over and over from parents, students, and fans — that something is missing, and that we need cheerleaders back on the sidelines. It’s something people notice and miss every single week. Recently, we’ve also seen posts about the Menasha Cheer Co-Op program, where some Neenah students are now participating so they can continue cheering. That alone shows how strong the interest still is. Our students want — and should be able — to represent their own school and keep doing what they love.

Cheer and dance often get mentioned together, but they’re really two different things that complement each other rather than compete.

  • Cheerleading focuses on leading the crowd, supporting athletic teams, and keeping energy high throughout the game. It also involves athletic elements such as stunting, tumbling, jumps, and formations that require teamwork, strength, and proper technique.
  • Dance focuses on performance and artistry, showcasing choreographed routines during halftime and competitions.

Both programs can easily exist side by side, as they do in many nearby schools like Appleton East, North, and West, Fox Valley Lutheran, Freedom, and Bay Port. Each one offers students a unique way to be part of their school community and to build confidence, teamwork, and pride.

While Neenah is fortunate to have the Rocket Rowdys, that group isn’t a cheer program. The Rowdys do an awesome job bringing energy to the student section, but a cheer team leads the entire crowd — families, students, alumni, and community members — and represents the school in an organized, year-round way. Both groups can exist together and actually make each other stronger.

This petition is meant to show community interest in bringing cheer back to Neenah High School under a volunteer-based model.

By signing, you’re helping show support for reintroducing cheer as a positive, inclusive opportunity for students when the district next reviews extracurricular offerings.

Thank you for supporting the continued growth of student activities and school spirit in Neenah.

I was a cheerleader all throughout highschool. Our cheers not only had the crowd engaging and hyped up about the game but it helped the team knowing people were also cheering. It helps to establish trust between one another and forms a bond like no other. To this day I am still very close with my fellow cheerleaders.

I support cheer as I have grandchildren coming up through the school that would absolutely want to be in cheer. My daughter is a cheer coach for menasha middle school and would love for her daughters who attend Neenah schools to be in cheer as they get older.

Past cheerleader for NHS and past Poms (now dance) as a Freshman, and a current parent in the NJSD. I stuck with cheer through all of high school, and I can not believe that Neenah doesn't offer a cheer program anymore when youth are interested. Let's get as many kids participating in school activities as possible! I can't even tell you how awesome it was to head off to cheer camp and come back with full extensions, basket tosses, and other new tumbling. Our coach was shocked how quickly we were able to learn skills and safely execute them. We have over 2000 students in both the middle and high school buildings, let's get them connected to cheer at each level if there's interest and start building this program!

It's sad, shameful and frankly laughable that Neenah can't support Cheer, Dance AND Show Choir, which is the other reason that I've heard we don't have cheer. Show Choir is more singing with lighter dance moves, dance more intense dance and cheer more tumbling/stunts and leading the crowd. When every other team I saw this and past football/basketball seasons have cheer, dance and I assume Show Choir, PLUS they're smaller schools like Menasha, Kaukauna and Kimberly, Neenah should be big enough to support all three!

As a parent of two very successful all star cheerleaders (both became UW Madison cheerleaders) AND a daughter who has won national championships with her local studio...I 100% support a cheer program at Neenah High School. It is a sport and if done right, extremely entertaining and supportive to the various sports programs. Please reconsider as it seems all of the previous roadblocks were addressed and answered. This is starting to sound like there is more to this refusal than what has been presented at face value. All kids should have the opportunity to pursue their sport and passion at Neenah High School.

We had a program when I was in high school 2002 to 2006. I was part of the program. There is absolutely zero reason one can give that this was ever discontinued. Also zero explanation as to why a volunteer run program is not approved!

Yes please bring cheerleading back. My daughter enjoys. When we moved back to Neenah she was hoping there would be cheer team.

I think having a cheer team is a fantastic idea. Whats the problem with boosting school spirit? If this is being offered at no-cost, what is stopping Neenah from agreeing to this? Neenah is so big and well known because of the sports program, I have always thought it was crazy we didn't have a cheer team!
