The UCSC Cheer team is looking to re-instate our team after COVID-19 closures. If you are interested in seeing our team at sports events, school celebrations, or joining the team yourself, please sign your name! This petition will help show the Athletics Department the school's interest in our sports club!

I am still honestly stunned by how many of you want to see this team back on the sidelines. I have been putting together a formal request to show the department that this is what the community truly wants.

I am honestly overwhelmed by how many people want to see cheer back on campus. If you could send this link to a few more people today we might actually hit our goal sooner than I ever imagined.

To be considered a sport, and activity must involve physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. Cheerleading involves throwing, catching, spinning, and flipping, which all involve physical exertion.

As a UCSC alumni and cheer alumni as well. It saddens me to see that the school does not recognize cheerleading as a sport. Cheerleading IS a sport and should be recognized as one on campus. The time I was there, UCSC cheer team provided me with a family away from home, pushed my skills as an ATHLETE which helped me improve as a flyer. I attended rigorous practices and came together as a team to cheer on our fellow ucsc teams. I hope this decision gets reconsidered because that’s the right thing to do.

I was a Cheer member of UC Santa Cruz Cheer for 2 years. In support if the sport of cheer, pride for the university, and spirt of positivity, the UCSC Cheer team should be reinstated. When I was on the team, captains continued working to try and connect with OPERS but was not equally met with clear direction or support in efforts to become a dedicated sport or athletic functioning entity of UCSC. The University should consider how athletic funds are disbursed with athletics and direct funds to support a wider range of athletic sports offered.

Didn’t know they stopped the program. When I was playing lacrosse in ‘13 we had cheer leaders at games and it was awesome! Hope they can be reinstated!

I was a part of this program in 2019, and I witnessed first hand the disrespect and neglect from the athletics/activities department. Cheerleading is a recognized sport at the collegiate level. UCSC should do it’s part to support student athletes and, not only reinstate cheer, the athletics department should also provide funding for a COACH and additional FUNDS to cover equipment and other expenses- just as they would any other sport. When staff members actually respect and support their cheerleaders, the program will thrive.

As someone who cheered throughout highschool, I’ve been really looking forward to being able to try out for this team since I committed to UCSC! I was saddened when the cheer team didn’t return when most other on campus sports teams did. Really hoping the team gets reinstated so myself and many other people who haven’t been able to have an opportunity to join due to Covid will be able to!

there is no reason to not let these students cheer. cmon ucsc do your part and provide an opportunity for your students to pursue this sport at the collegiate level
